There is evidence that pipe smoking was quite common among convict women.
In the book An Archaeology of Institutional Confinement: The Hyde Park Barracks, 1848 -1886, by Peter Davies, Penny Crook and Tim Murray it states.
“Due to the substantial risk of fire in the Asylum women were supposed to smoke in designated areas.
Authorities installed gas lighting in 1866, with padlocks fitted to each lantern, to prevent the women from lighting up at night and smoking their pipes in bed ‘after the hours of Midnight’ (Government Asylums Board, quoted in Hughes 2004:79). The recovery of thousands of used matches from the underfloor spaces, however, suggest that smoking persisted in the dormitories."
